Avatar closing in on Titanic

The 3D blockbuster “Avatar” by Canadian film Director James Cameron enjoyed further box office bonanza during the weekend to remain on top as it got closer towards total takings of 50 million pounds in Britain.

The tale of a man sent on a mission to infiltrate an alien race, generated another 5.5 million pounds, based on comments made by Screen International on Tuesday and rapidly closing in on “Titanic” – also by Cameron — as the biggest-grossing film of all time.

The science fiction epic failed to break the symbolic 10 million-pound barrier as it débuted in the United Kingdom and lost its number one spot in just one week.

However, it subsequently steadily managed to gain momentum over five weeks and has until now taken 49.3 million pounds in its British run.

In second sport was the remake of “Sherlock Holmes” by Guy Ritchie with Robert Downey Jr. as the legendary detective while Jude Law portrayed Dr Watson “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel” managed to climb back up to third.

Meryl Streep plays restaurateur at the crescendo of a love triangle in the fourth place “It’s Complicated.”

Up at number five was “Up in the Air” with George Clooney as a corporate frequent flyer in the midst of a travel clampdown while “The Book of Eli”, with Denzel Washington portraying a man on a sent in post-apocalyptic America made its debut at six.

Slipping from third to seventh place was the vampire movie “Daybreakers,” with Willem Dafoe and Ethan Hawke.

“The Road,” the motion picture version of Cormac McCarthy’s dark novel came in eighth, while “Did You Hear about the Morgans?” ranked down at nine from seven.

At number ten was “St Trinian’s 2: The Legend of Fritton’s Gold.”
