Avatar honoured with two Golden Globes
Avatar walked away from the Golden Globes Award ceremony as the big winner.
The fantasy epic authored by Canadian film director James Cameron received two of the coveted trophies.
The sci-fi motion picture received the award for Best Film Drama and the title of Best Director was given to Cameron.
The fifty-five year-old creator of the Terminator series said that directing movies was is the best job in the world, adding that the position entitles him to create entertainment on a global scale.
Sixty-year-old Jeff Bridges was awarded the prize for Best Dramatic Actor for his role in Crazy Heart and the audience honoured him with a standing ovation.
Sandra Bullock and Meryl Streep were awarded with Golden Globe for Best Dramatic Actress and Best Actress In A Musical Or Comedy respectively.
Other Golden Globe notables were Best Comedy Actor which went to Robert Downey Jr for his role in Sherlock Holmes and Mo’Nique’s effort in Precious was awarded with the prize for Best Supporting Actress.
Sixty-seven-year-old film director Martin Scorsese was awarded a special prize for his outstanding contribution to film business.
Meanwhile, the special brand of humour created by Ricky Gervais got mixed reviews as the Briton hosted the evening at Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.
The event represented the first time in 15 years that the Golden Globe Awards had been hosted by a single individual instead of a series of presenters Gervais’ stint had been anticipated.
The New York Times said he was “Cheeky, silly and funny as heck.”
The top entertainment website TMZ said of the British comedian that everythjing he said as a host during the ceremony was hilarious, adding that “Gervais was on fire Sunday.”
Meanwhile, the influential industry periodical qualified Gervais’s opening as “disappointingly toothless”. The paper added that he had been predictable and is role as a host appeared to be a bid for self-promotion.
