A Newcastle United striker found his car ablaze just days after being charged with assaulting his ex-girlfriend. Andy Carroll was staying with the team’s captain Kevin Nolan in honour of his bail conditions at the time of the incident.

Carroll, who was recently awarded a new five-year contract with the team, bought the chrome-plated Range Rover to celebrate the deal but spotted the vehicle in flames on Wednesday night. Police were called to the property in Ponteland, Northumberland where the garage door had also been vandalized with graffiti aimed at the United striker.

The 21-year-old sign-up appeared before Tynedale Magistrates in Hexham on Monday to face charges of assault against his former girlfriend, Laurie Henderson. Henderson claims that he assaulted her after she caught him cavorting with another girl in her bathroom.

The 6ft 3in striker was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning after the police were called to Henderson’s house in Ponteland. Sources have claimed that he will deny the charges of assault and claim self-defence.

Carroll purchased the brand new Range Rover after securing a five-year deal with Newcastle United. The car had various high-tech gadgets including a games console in the back.

A former pupil at the Joseph Swan School, he showed promise as a football player and made his first-team debut in 2006 with his Premier League debut following just three months later; he was only a teenager at the time.

The blaze was brought under control by firefighters who arrived at the house at around 7pm. The graffiti – which allegedly included profanities directed towards the England Under 21 forward – has since been covered-up and security staff are now guarding the premises against further attack.

The police are now appealing for anyone with information regarding the incident to step forward.

A massive eight percent of motorists are giving up their cars as they can’t afford to run them anymore, according to a new survey. The research, undertaken by moneysupermarket.com, also found that 57 percent of car owners were trying to reduce the amount of driving they do.

However, of the 860 people who took part in the study, almost a third (30.5 percent) said they were sticking to their usual motoring habits only when they could afford to, while another 4.5 percent said they weren’t changing their driving habits at all.

In a statement, the head of car insurance at the online comparison site moneysupermarket.com, Steve Sweeney, said that as driving can be a real drain on the finances, those looking to tighten their belts are reducing their time behind the wheel first.

He added that drivers are becoming savvier when it comes to saving money on motoring in the wake on car insurance increases and fuel price hikes. Sweeney went on to say that for most, cutting out driving altogether would be the ultimate sacrifice.

He said the best advice is to shop around for car insurance and not just stick with your current provider if you’re not getting the best deal. Fitting a car alarm and parking in a locked garage will also reduce premiums, he added.

Teenage males have long held an unenviable reputation when it comes to being behind the wheel.

The audacity of youth has been tempered somewhat by news that young men may be the fastest, but they are also the most expensive.

Male drivers in their late teens are increasingly difficult to insure, a sign that their reputation for speed and accidents has finally caught up with them. A new study by moneysupermarket.com has revealed that these drivers are required to pay almost 80 per cent more for vehicle insurance than their female counterparts. In many cases, the cost of insurance far outweighs the cost of the car, as insurers get tough on young men. However, this may be a contributing factor to why the number of registered vehicles has dropped alarmingly in the past year, with drivers from all age brackets trending away from exorbitant insurance costs, instead preferring to take their chances that any damage incurred will be less than the up-front payment.

In the moneysupermarket.com research, all ages of driver were analysed in terms of insurance charges. It found that the cheapest rate to cover an 18 year old male at the wheel of a 2005 1.4L Ford Fiesta was £4,897, with the average premium being £7,917. This is 79 per cent greater than that for an 18 year old female driver, who can expect to pay £4,422. Fortunately for the boys, after gaining experience on the road, they can expect their premium to drop by up to 50 per cent in the second year.

Premiums continue to drop as drivers get older, with motorists in their thirties paying far less to insure their vehicles. The pattern continues into the forties, and not until a driver has reached 50 that men start to pay less than women.

The latest threat of strikes across the London Tube system has seen the public once again turn to public transport.

While members of the RMT transport union, who staff the Tube lines, have voted overwhelming to take some form of industrial action, the average traveller is returning to the more traditional public transport options of rail and bus links to get around the capital.

The RMT is liaising with fellow transport union TSSA to decide on the next course for action, but both are fearful that cost cutting polices could result in the scrapping of some 140 ticket offices across the London Underground, with job losses estimated at around 800 from areas including maintenance, ticketing and inspectors.

Fortunately, a new website, publictransport.co.uk, provides a thorough overview of the services available in London as alternatives to using the Tube, with helpful sections on both Bus Travel and Train Travel. Showcasing a range of options that are found not just in the capital but across the UK as well, the website offers an insight into how public transport systems work and how envied the British programmes are abroad.

The UK government is also committed to steering consumers back to public transportation as part of a wider bid to reduce the overall carbon footprint of the country, with London at the forefront of environmentally friendly technology and user-friendly public transport systems that reduce the number of vehicles on the road.

The weakening of the euro is set to lure more Britons abroad this summer.

Since the effects of the global economic crisis sent the pound tumbling against the euro around 18 months ago, devastating the travel and tourism industry, many traditional destinations for UK holidaymakers have been priced out of reach.

However, in a boost for those planning a summer getaway, the pound has rebounded to reach a new 19-month high against the European currency. The single currency has fallen by a significant 11 per cent against the sterling in the past 12 months, with the good news released just after the disastrous World Cup campaign sent England’s would-be hero’s home shamefully early.

Sterling’s upsurge in value to reach 1.24 euros represents the highest rate of exchange since way back November 2008, and means that the average British family could now be saving up to £700 on summer holiday around the Mediterranean compared to this time last year. Additionally, the struggling euro-zone economies on the mainland mean Britons based on the Continent can take advantage of lower prices on everyday household products, particularly good news for expats and retirees living in Spain, France and Portugal.

Croatia, Bulgaria and the troubled economy of Greece all are looming as bargain holiday destinations, while Eastern European countries will also offer excellent value for money. Travel specialist Thomas Cook claims that related travel expenses such as ground transport, drinks, meals, cigarettes, newspapers and snacks will all be markedly cheaper than a year ago, while online booking specialist lastminute.com has reported a massive rush for holiday bookings following the World Cup early exit.

Supporters planning on attaching a flag to their vehicle have been given some helpful advice.

M&S Money, the financial services division of the Marks and Spencer Group, has issued a safety warning to football fans that will fly the flag on their cars during the FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

A recent study by M&S Car insurance found that around 22 per cent of all English fans are planning on attaching the St George flag to their motor vehicle to show their support forn the national team during the month-long tournament.

The study also found that in the lead up to the team’s World Cup opener, which saw the Steven Gerrard-led team draw with the United States on June 12, the number of women planning on flying the flag on their motor was almost as high as the number of men, with 21 per cent and 24 per cent respectively.

A closer investigation found that 56 per cent of would-be flag bearers planned on attaching the flag to their car antennae. 17 per cent of those polled said that the flag would be displayed from the wing mirror on the passenger side, while 13 per cent said that the flag will be placed inside the front windscreen.

As a result, M&S Money has advised supporters to consider carefully the safety of the placement of the flag, despite less than half of the respondents stating that flags could present a distraction to drivers.
