A 26-year-old holidaymaker, James Ross, is at home recovering after enduring a brutal, 13-day ordeal on the Algarve. He was held captive by a group of fellow Britons in a villa regarding an alleged drug debt. His captors chopped off three of his toes and one of his ears.

After nearly two weeks of being gruesomely tortured over a £10,000 debt, Mr. Ross managed to escape despite having two broken legs. He was found close to Loule in the village of Alfontes last Monday at 9:00 by Carlos Pereira.

Mr Pereira stated that Mr. Ross was bleeding profusely and was barely able to walk. He said the pale and panicked Mr. Ross asked him to stop and help, claiming he had been in a car accident. Noticing the extent of physical damage Mr. Ross had incurred, Mr. Pereira drove him to a square and rang the police.

Newspaper Correio da Manha stated Ross owed £10,000 to Briton John McLean over a marijuana deal. McLean lured Ross to the Algarve on October 5 by telling Ross he could work off his debt on a cannabis farm. But Ross was kidnapped shortly after arriving at Faro airport at 21:00.

Two days later the kidnappers phoned Mrs. Donna Ross claiming her husband was unconscious with numerous broken bones and being held prisoner in the woods, Correio da Manha said. Mrs Ross identified the voice in the phone call as John Maclean’s, who threatened to kill her husband if she contacted the police.

Aided by a tip from British police who monitored the call, Portuguese authorities arrested Mr. Maclean and three other men over the weekend.

The men were identified in reports as Calum McAleod, Ronnie Rose and Terrence MacGurk. The armed Portuguese authorities were part of Portugal’s National Counter Terrorism Unit. They arrested the British men close to the capital Lisbon just outside of Albufeira.

A poster campaign for Virgin Holidays has been banned as it was said to be glamorising alcohol. The travel firms’ ‘Rockstar’ ads showed socialites sipping from a Jacuzzi loaded with Champagne.

The commericial, which was meant to imply how the holiday firm can provide luxury, also pictured a tonner of empty bottles and champers glasses on the ground and people pouring bubbly into the Jacuzzi. A complainant said that alcohol was irresponsibly portrayed in the ad.

Virgin Holidays, however, defended the campaign saying the Champagne was used to signify that ridiculous demands can be met by the company. The firm also argued that the idea represented an outlandish and decadent request that was meant to appear exaggerated.

People viewing the ad, created by Miles Calcraft Briginshaw, were meant to focus on the request and not the actual drinking, according to Virgin. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) did not agree, however, and said the campaign showed a casual attitude towards drinking.

Virgin was told that when featuring alcohol in their adverts they should take greater care.

In recent years, many holidaymakers have turned away from the travel agent in favour of the internet.

However, the popularity of online searches has been curtailed somewhat in recent times, as the ongoing economic downturn and business closures, coupled with natural events such as the Iceland ash cloud and earthquakes have seen customers searching for greater protection from physical and financial disasters.

While more than a dozen British travel agents have folded in 2010, their absence is beginning to be felt by travellers, who are becoming increasingly less protected when they choose to do it alone. The attractions of holiday protection, nominally under either of the two regulatory bodies in Britain – ATOL (Air Travel Organiser’s Licence) and ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents), can ultimately end up being a sound investment. The minimal per centage placed on top of ticketing being a small price to pay for peace of mind when abroad.

For anyone who is debating the pros and cons of individual versus agency booking, a new website has been developed to provide an insight into the industry, its regulations, and its goals. Travel-agency.co.uk introduces the services offered by one of the world’s leading institutions, with an emphasis on travel agents UK.

Use a travel agency whenever you want to organise flights, book car rentals, find hotel rooms, enjoy concerts and much more. When on holiday, the last thing you want to have to worry about is your airport transfer, so head online and find out why a travel agent can make all the difference to your next trip.

The UK is pushing on with plans to increase the number of bicycle users.

In the past year, the government and in particular, the London Mayor Boris Johnson, have been actively pursuing a path away from vehicle travel as they work towards objectives in the area of environmental sustainability.

With the recent budget and impending VAT rises sure to hit the pockets of the average UK consumer hard, many people are now contemplating a return to pedal power in a bid to stay fit and save the environment.

In 2008, a survey by the Department for Transport (Dft) showed that the number of cyclists in the UK had been in decline since the 1950s. That year, it found that just eight per cent of individuals across the country said they were regular bicycle users, hopping on at least three times per week. Those people who used their bike once a week numbered around 14 per cent, while 8 per cent used it once a month. The majority, 69 per cent, said they used a bike less than once a year. Men were more frequent cyclists than women, the most popular age bracket being those aged 11 to 16.

Now that the UK looks committed to a path of petrol-less travel, the interest in bikes has been slowly improving. The economic hardships forecast for the short-term future will also lead many people to road bikes, and there are several websites featuring the best road-going products.

Road-bikes.co.uk is a site dedicated to those who already have a road bike or those who are considering buying. With a host of books on maintenance and advice for users, the website is a valuable resource for anyone looking at keeping their car in the garage and getting behind the handle bars.

Prices are being cut by as much as 35 per cent as agents and operators desperately attempt to woo cash-strapped customers for those final summer package holidays before the onset of winter.

Traditional family favourites, such as Spain, Turkey and Cyprus have all seen prices tumble, with UK holidaymakers in particular being offered the opportunity to experience these always popular destinations at a fraction of the usual cost. According to the recently releases Family Holiday Report from the Post Office, the price of an average family package holiday has dropped by one-third compared to this time last year.

Offering a wide selection of holidays from all over the world, the site specialises in European locations and even offers a range of handy holiday information guides to the likes of Spain, France, Italy, Holland, Greece, Portugal, Malta, Slovenia, Montenegro and Poland. For those looking further afield, there are cheap package holidays to California and Florida in the USA, where families can be thrilled at Disneyland or Disney World.

There is also a fantastic selection of package holiday deals to suit all manner of journey, be it a beach break, ski holiday, winter retreat of luxury treat.
