Jude Law this week became the latest star to quit Jane Got a Gun, a troubled production which has already seen its director and a star other than Law exit the project.

The film first hit headlines at the start of the week when director Lynne Ramsay failed to report to the Santa Fe set on what was meant to be the first full day of shooting. Gavin O’Connor, who directed Warrior, replaced Ramsay – however the switch did nothing to prevent Law also jumping ship.

Hunger star Michael Fassbaner became the first notable exit, citing a conflict of schedules. His role was then snapped up by Joel Edgerton, who still remains tied to the production alongside Oscar winner Lady Portman and Brazilian actor Rodrigo Santoro.

According to sources, Law had only agreed to star in the film due to Ramsay directing and chose not to remain after her exit. Scott Steindoff, the producer of the project, has already expressed his shock and disappointment at Ramsay’s failure to attend the scheduled first day of shooting. The director, whose credits include We Need to Talk About Kevin, has thus far made no comment regarding her involvement in Jane Got a Gun.

A power cut in the West End resulted in some theatres having to cancel their shows last night.

Evening performances of both Matilda the Musical and Trelawny of the Wells, scheduled at the Cambridge Theatre and the Donmar Warehouse respectively, had to be cancelled – with confirmation made via their spokespeople on Twitter. According to UK Power Networks, a fault began affecting 715 properties across Covent Garden around 16:20 GMT yesterday afternoon. By 21:40 GMT last night, electricity had been successfully restored to all customers.

Additionally, Covent Garden Tube station also had to be shut until around 2045 GMT after its lifts stopped working. A spokesperson representing UK Power Networks, the operator of the local grid, told of how engineers worked quickly in order to restore power, before then apologising for any inconvenience caused.

A Donmar Warehouse spokesperson said via Twitter that the theatre was sincerely apologetic for any disappointment or inconvenience caused by its cancellation and thanked its audiences for their understanding. Ticket-holders to productions at both theatres are to receive a full-refund.

Elsewhere in the area, an entire block of evening classes at Pineapple Dance on Langley Street was cancelled once the studios went dark. A spokesman of Thames Water said that the power failure was entirely unrelated to repairs of a broken water main nearby.

Fatboy Slim yesterday became the first-ever DJ to perform a set at the Houses of Parliament.

Real name Norman Cook, the DJ, a huge international star, merely starred as a warm-up act - a stark contrast to having performed to a quarter of a million party goers on Brighton Beach almost 11 years ago. Bryce Moore, a Northamptonshire engineering student, was the headliner after winning a nationwide competition to perform at the House of Commons’ terrace bar.

Speaking nervously before his set yesterday at the event – called House the House – the 22-year-old Moore told of how it would be daunting for him to meet such a living legend as Cook. The youngster then added that he would be the last to complain if he were to become a DJ full-time after graduating university.

Previously, Cook has also played in an igloo, on the Great Wall of China and to thousands on Sydney’s Bondi Beach. The Brighton native commented that he has played both unique and exciting places across the map but performing in the House of Commons has to be his most unique experience to date.

Conservative MP for Chester Stephen Mosley, who was in attendance at the event, uploaded a picture of Cook performing his set on his Twitter account. The Master of Ceremonies was Tory MP for Hove and Portslade Mike Weatherley.

Australian police have claimed that they have seized their largest-ever haul of the harmful drug methamphetamine, which was hidden in a large shipment from the south of China.

In total, the drugs weighed 585kg, which means that they had a street value of US$440m. Three individuals, an Australian, a Hong Kong citizen and a Singaporean, have all been apprehended and will appear in court this afternoon. Officers have already confirmed that additional arrests across Australia and overseas remain a possibility. If found guilty, the suspects could face a life sentence behind bars.

At a specially-held news conference, Australian federal police said that the drug, known to users as “ice”, had been seized after an investigation that spanned four-months. Suspicions were raised by one member of the public who became curious after witnessing activities at a warehouse located in West Ryde, Sydney.

The drugs were sent from the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen and were unsuccessfully concealed in a shipment of chemicals used for cleaning. Mr Andrew Scipione, a New South Wales Police Commissioner, commented that methamphetamine is a harmful and insidious drug that sends its users mad, which is why it was of paramount importance to stop the syndicate responsible for trying to import such large amounts of the substance into the country.

The investigation was a collaboration between the Australian Federal Police, the Australian Crime Commission, Customs officials and New South Wales Police. Tony Negus, Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police, told of the considerable lengths the gang had gone to in order to evade detection.

Rapper Ja Rule has left a New York prison, but has been taken straight back into custody over his tax evasion case, the sentence he had been serving simultaneously.

As is well known in the world of music, the rapper had been serving time for gun possession. Two years for that particular offence were handed to him but had been mostly completed before he was released. Authorities in the US escorted the star, aged 36, out of jail and it is thus far unknown whether or not he will be required to serve more time in relation to his tax case.

Due to his celebrity status, Ja Rule, real name Jeffrey Atkins, served his sentence in protective custody. His lawyer, Stacey Richman, told reporters that the musician wishes to get back in the studio immediately in order to pay back the £1.1m he owes in taxes. Atkins was described as a devoted father who has been anticipating his daughter’s graduation.

In the gun case, NYPD officers said that they had discovered a .40-calibre semiautomatic gun, which was loaded, in the rear door of the $250,000 luxury car Ja Rule was driving after it had been stopped for speeding. The performer pleaded guilty to that particular offence in 2010.

Later, in March 2011, he admitted to a failure to pay taxes on over $3m that was earned between the years 2004 and 2006.

Olympic and Paralympic star Oscar Pistorius is facing a charge of murder after his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp was slain at his home in the South African capital, Pretoria.

Police were first called to the residence in the early hours of Thursday morning, where they discovered paramedics treating Miss Steenkamp, aged 29, with gunshot numerous wounds to the head and body. She passed away at the scene.

After officers recovered a 9mm pistol, Pistorious, aged 26, was arrested and will be taken to court on Friday. Earlier, reports had suggested that Pistorious might have shot his girlfriend after mistaking her for an intruder. Since then, fellow neighbours of Pistorious in the upmarket Silver Woods gated community on the outskirts of the South African capital have already informed police officers that both screaming and shouting were heard prior to the shooting.

As is well known in the world of sport, Pistorius was the first-ever double amputee to compete in an Olympic race. Nicknamed the “blade runner”, the athletes races with carbon fibre prosthetic blades that were created after he was after he was amputated below the knee prior to his first birthday.

Miss Steenkamp’s publicist released confirmation that her client Moiss Reeva Steenkamp, a successful model, had died. It was added that everyone close to the victim regarded her as a “kind human being” and had been in tears ever since hearing the news.

England secured a first win over South American rivals Brazil in 23 years last night as a spectacular Frank Lampard strike gave the Three Lions a deserved victory at Wembley.

The Samba Boys returned to Wembley to mark the 150th anniversary celebrations of the Football Association and played a full part in what was a highly entertaining friendly match. Manchester United ace Wayne Rooney had steered England into the lead with what was his 33rd goal in international football. Earlier, Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart had saved a penalty from former world player of the year Ronaldinho.

After a mistake from Chelsea defender Gary Cahill, Fred put Brazil level after the interval. Veteran Lampard though, who came on at half-time for Tom Cleverly, gave Roy Hodgson’s men a confidence-boosting victory with his precisely curled effort on the hour.

The win completed a more than satisfying evening’s work for England as left-back Ashley Cole was capped for the 100th time and Jack Wilshere of Arsenal, tipped as the future of English football, put in a solid display alongside his captain Steven Gerrard as the two were paired together in centre midfield for the first time.

Particularly in the first half, WIlshere was outstanding in what was just his seventh England appearance and seemed intent on covering lost ground after the ankle injury that kept him on the sidelines for a total of 15 months.

Over 1,000 movie posters from Hollywood’s golden age have been received by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences after being donated.

The posters document an era of “B-Movies” in the 20th Century’s first half, with genres such as westerns, musicals and war films all covered. Dwight M Cleveland, a private collector from Chicago, donated them.

The Academy said that “significant gaps” were filled by the posters and have been “a dream to receive” as its collection has become a lot more complete. In total, there are 1088 posters which will all be housed in the Margaret Herrick Library in Beverly Hills.
Linda Mehr, the director of the library, commented that B-movies have always tapped into the general movie-going public’s consciousness and for years have provided a better understanding of the times they were set in.

Mr Cleveland had collected the posters since 1977 and amassed what experts often described as the world’s biggest and most significant collection of historical movie posters. The Chicago property developer remarked that film posters are an indigenous American art form and that by donating his collection to the academy, a greater appreciation for the works will be garnered among members of the general public while a good example is set for other collectors.

Conflicting reports continue to emerge over whether or not Beyonce sang live at the inauguration of President Barack Obama.

A spokeswoman representing the Marine Corps Band explained to a leading UK newspaper that a “last minute” decision was made by Beyonce to perform to a backing track that had been pre-recorded. However, the US Marine Corp has rushed to insist that no-one in the Marine Band stands in a position to comment on or assess whether or not the performance was live or pre-recorded.

In the days since the controversial performance, it has already been confirmed that the band didn’t perform live – news that may come as a disappointment to the millions of American that tuned in to see President Obama being sworn in for a second term in the White House.

The ceremony was laden with performances from other big names such as James Taylor and Kelly Clarkson. Beyonce sang the American national anthem however when it was reported that she had mimed, the story rapidly travelled across the globe.

In a statement, the US Marine Corps gave a clearer picture of what occurred by stating that there wasn’t an opportunity for Beyonce to hold rehearsals with the Marine Band, which is why a live performance would have been ill-advised for a high-profile event of such magnitude.

John McTiernan, director of the Die Hard series, yesterday lost an appeal that aimed to have a prison sentence of one year overturned.

Aged 62, McTiernan was originally handed his sentence after it was found that he lied to the FBI during a wiretapping case. He was free on bail as he appealed the conviction, which the US Supreme Court refused to review.

Due to these developments, McTiernan is now expected to be ordered to prison. Once he has served his custodial sentence, the director, who also made Predator and The Hunt for Red October, will be under supervised release for a period of three years.

Originally, Mr McTiernan had been accused of lying about having hired ex-celebrity private detective Anthony Pellicano to put a wiretap on film producer Chuck Roven shortly after the pair had worked on the film Rollerball together. In 2006, the director pleaded guilty after the FBI managed to obtain a recording in which the wiretap was discussed but then withdrew his guilty plea.

After falling short in his bid to suppress the harmful recording, McTiernan again pleaded guilty in 2010 – which allowed him the opportunity to launch an appeal. Shortly after, he was sentenced by a judge in a District Court and hit with a fine of $100,000 (£62,400).
