Marvel releases details of Afro Latin Spiderman
Marvel Comics has unveiled details of its new half-black, half-Latin Spider-Man – the replacement for Peter Parker after his death.
Miles Morales, who was first introduced in Ultimate Fallout’s Issue 4, hails from New York, like Parker, and is also a nerdy teenager.Alex Alonso, Marvel’s editor-in-chief, told how the new web-slinger will speak to the US’ rich cultural heritage.
Parker was killed by Green Goblin in Issue 160 of Ultimate Spider-Man in June. While Parker and Morales are both geeky and from working-class areas of New York City, Parker hailed from a mostly white area of Queens while Morales lives with his African-American and Latino parents in a more ethnically diverse corner of Brooklyn.
Going into this we all knew that we wanted to make sure that a statement is made about the 21st century, explained Alonso. The editor-in-chief, who has a mother from England and a father from Mexico, told of how he cried when President Obama was elected because he was an African-American but also largely because of being mixed race like himself.
Alonso added that readers are going to see a very different Spider-man whenever Morales peels back his mask – evoking entirely different emotions than Parker was ever capable of. Alonso told news agencies that Spidey scribe Brian Michael Bendis is of Jewish descent and has two children that he adopted from Africa.
