Queue jumping passes for ADHD kids at theme parks

Posted on September 03, 2009

HYPERACTIVE children and those suffering from attention-deficit disorders are now allowed to queue jump at UK theme parks because of the stress of waiting is too difficult to handle.

UK tourist boards have the privilege on offer so that these children can jump the queue with their friends.

Teachers have criticised the plan, explaining that this will undermine their attempts to encourage patience and it would be a greater advantage for children with ADHD, hyperactive disorder and attention deficit, to learn how to wait.

Kids with ADHD, which has been recognised as a psychiatric condition for 15 years, are offered special passes in most UK theme parks as well as many abroad upon proof of the condition.

Andrea Bilbow, chief executive of the National Attention Deficity Disorder Information and Support Service, claims that the plan avoids tantrums.

She said that Children with ADHD are very impulsive and just can’t cope in a queue or when there is a delay in gratification. Many primary schools let them go ahead at dinner time and it stops scenes, she added.

Miss Bilbow said people who criticise the tactic demonstrated that teachers lacked knowledge  of the condition.

The Disability Discrimination Act forces attractions to cater to the needs of all visitors.

People suffering from ADHD have a 30% “maturity lag” and their mental development is stunted until they reach about 26 years of age.
