Shopping Frenzy In Britain Make This A Banner Year

Posted on December 31, 2009

The Christmas shopping madness amongst Britons still continues as millions of deal hunters have hit the High Street with antennas up and searching for the latest offers.

The possibility of large discounts ahead of the VAT increase tomorrow (January 1) is believed to be attracting massages of people to shopping centres and to high streets all over the UK for several days of cut-price shopping.

It was reported on December 28 that the number of UK shoppers on the country’s high streets surged by 17.9 per cent for the previous day in comparison to a year ago.

According to market data company Experian, this represents the highest jump on record for December 27,

Richard Dodd, a British Retail Consortium (BRC) representative said that this post Christmas sales period had been the strongest one seen we have seen in several years, and maybe for ever.

A lot of the surge in shopper activity has been attributed to the Britons rushing to take advantage of period preceding the rise of the VAT on January 1.

One example of a record being broken as at north London’s immense 125-shop Brent Cross centre, which welcomed 16,000 shoppers in its first hour of opening on December 27, numbers which the hadn’t experienced it opened in 1976.
