“Poker Face”, a single by Lady Gaga and the debut album “I Dreamed A Dream” by Susan Boyle have received Sunday the highest accolades in terms of commercial success in the UK in 2009.

The Official Charts Company said the debut single of New York native Lada Gaga, “Just Dance,” came in at the 2009 official singles chart at number three, behind “I Gotta Feeling” by the Black Eyed Peas.

Susan Boyle, the forty-eight-year-old singer Scotland, gained the number one spot in the 2009 album ranking thanks to her acclaimed “I Dreamed a Dream” which sold more than 1.5 million copies in only six weeks.

The former Britain’s Got Talent runner-up was unknown only a year ago and became an overnight internet sensation after she shocked the world with her stunning audition on the talent programme last April.

In reaching the number one spot in Britain, Boyle edged out Lady Gaga’s “The Fame”, which was relinquished into second place as well as “Crazy Love” by Michael Buble for 2009’s top-selling albums.

As for the weekly singles race in the UK, “Bad Romance” from Lady Gaga has pushed “The Climb” by X Factor winner Joe McElderry off the top spot of the chart.

McElderry, who had failed in his bid to reach the Christmas number win thanks to the controversial anti-XFactor Facebook campaign which supported Rage Against The Machine’s “Killing In The Name”, only managed to stay at the number one sport for one week over new year.

Rage’s track slipped from number two down to the 40th spot on the singles chart in the UK.

Former X Factor contestant Susan Boyle’s first album, I Dreamed A Dream, is well positioned to become 2009’s top selling record.

According to data compiled by the Official Charts Company, the Scot’s debut CD has sold in excess of 1.4 million copies in just four weeks.

By last Saturday evening, the top three albums in contention for the best-selling album of 2009 had all experienced sales exceeding the million mark. Competing for the total with Boyle are Kings of Leon and Lady Gaga.

Lady Gaga’s album The Fame had been in the top echelons of the charts for the last 49 weeks, while Kings Of Leon’s Only By The Night has had 65 weeks of success.

Just a year ago, the then church worker Susan Boyle was a complete unknown but her audition on the ITV1 talent show Britain’s Got talent became an immediate internet sensation and was the initial step into the world of fame.

According to Billboard magazine, the launch of her studio record Dreamed a Dream represents the very best opening week for a dubut album from a female singer since the 1991 start of the SoundScan sales tracking.

Boyle now counts Hollywood actress Demi Moore as well as her heroine, performer Elaine Page, among some of her devoted supporters.

Her video of her first televised performance is now YouTube’s most popular clip of the year, being watched over 120 million times by fans around the world.

Official Charts Company managing director Martin Talbot said that in only four little weeks, Boyle had become UK’s top album artist by quite an extraordinary margin.

A native of Blackburn, West Lothian, in Scotland, Boyle still calls ‘home’ her simple four-bedroom council house, where her cat Pebbles keeps her company.

“I Dreamed A Dream”, the debut release of Susan Boyle, outsold close rivals JLS’s eponymous album on its launch day.

The former Britain’s Got Talent contestant saw sales exceeding 134,000 copies within 24 hours and the album’s popularity is expected to generate a total 400,000 copies sold during its initial week.

The 48-year-old star could very well have the best selling album of the year in the UK.

According to the Official Charts Company, Boyle’s debut project is an extremely strong contender for the number one chart spot which will be revealed this coming Sunday.

It’s been reported that this week’s second most popular release was JLS, with 28,260 copies sold so far, and followed by the 24,094 copies sold for Leona Lewis’s album.

“Absolute Greatest”, from Queen, is in fourth spot at the moment having sold 20,233 copies, followed by “The End” by the Black Eyed Peas, generating 18,646 sales.

Susan Boyle had recently been making some appearances in the US to promote her debut release, with a stint on the ultra popular Today Show.

Simon Cowell’s Britain’s Got Talent show has produced an enormous number of chart toppers. Miss Boyle was discovered on the talent programme last year and Leona Lewis won the 2006 edition of The X Factor while JLS finished last year’s competition as runners-up.

Cowell, whose record company Syco is overseeing Susan Boyle’s album, is likely to experience more success next month, when the yearly race for UK’s top selling Christmas album reaches a crescendo.

During the past four years, all Christmas number one singles have been achieved by X Factor winners.

Music retailer HMV is predicting a total of 400,000 copies sold this week for Miss Boyle, which would equate to Take That’s results with The Circus in December of last year.

If all continues at this pace, Boyle will be entering the record books. She is very well positioned to outdo Arctic Monkeys’ debut album “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not” which was released in 2006 and became the most popular debut album in UK chart history. It had sold a record 363,735 copies in its initial week. The Arctic Monkeys reached huge international success with practically no initial promotion.

US rockers Red Hot Chili Peppers have announced that a new album is in the works.

The California band is presently working on a follow-up to their last album, ‘Stadium Arcadium’, released in 2006. They have announced that the new album could be launched in October 2010.

Drummer Chad Smith told reporter that they will be writing for a while, adding that they usually take a long time to create new material.

After the tour to promote ‘Stadium Arcadium’, the Peppers took a long break. Kiedis claimed that the band had become exhausted from years of nonstop work since their hugely successful ‘Californication’. Kiedis, who had his first child in 2007, explained that he wanted to take care of his son, Everly Bear, and was also considering television work at the time.

During their hiatus, other band members also kept busy; Flea entered college for a music course at USC, and the rest of the group pursued various music projects.

Three band members Kiedis, Flea, and Smith played at the MusiCares event in honour of the groups lead singer on May 8, 2009. Kiedis, who has been battling substance abuse since childhood, received the Stevie Ray Vaughan Award for his support and dedication of the MusiCares MAP Fund and for his contribution in helping other people suffering from drug addiction while going through the recovery process.

Through their career, The Red Hot Chili Peppers have been honoured with seven Grammy Awards and have sold more than fifty-five million albums worldwide. The band was nominated on September 23, 2009 to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the 2010 class. VH1’s “Greatest Artists of Hard Rock” ranked The Red Hot Chilli Peppers at #30.

Welcome to a new era of music marketing; selling an album in the digital age.

Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan has revealed that the band’s next LP, ‘Teargarden by Kaleidyscope’, will be released one song at a time via their website.

The total 44 tracks will be offered to the public free of charge, with the first song being released near October’s end.

All the 44 songs will be eventually released in a traditional format although they won’t be incorporated in an album but rather in the shape of 11 cds of four tracks each.

Corgan explained that there are no limitations on what he can, and will do, adding that he believes the shape and size of the usual album is presently morphing into something different. The singer said that four-song releases will translate into him being able to still enjoy what he called “his happy life” despite giving all his heart to his art.

The Smashing Pumpkins have yet to reveal any titles for the songs although Corgan has said that the initial four tracks have a new language for him. He said these fours songs, despite stemming from his much loved psychedelic music, still have a very modern style.

When asked by Rolling Stone magazine if he could afford to offer his art in such a way, the singer replied that he’d rather be free than rich.

Actually, The Smashing Pumpkin’s new album release could very well be the wave of the future.

Madonna had reached another milestone in her long and successful career: matching Elvis.

The sexy and controversial singer has achieved to reaching Presley’s record of 11 number one solo albums in the UK. The feat was claimed last night, when Celebration shot right up straight to the top of the rankings.

In the process, Madonna knocked off Muse’s The Resistance from the No1 position, according to The Official UK Charts Company.

The ‘Queen’ of pop still had one hurdle to cross before being crowned all time album chart master, and it’s not a little feat. The Beatle have 15 UK number one albums.

But the pop diva can now claim to be the all time most successful female solo artist boasting the most weeks at the top of the UK charts with a total of 29, the most No1 singles, at13 and the most doubles for outdoing the singles and album charts together, with 4.

According to The Official UK Charts Company, the America super star’s recent tour, Sticky And Sweet, is also the highest earner in history for a female performer.

The album Celebration gathers 36 songs criss-crossing Madonna’s long career and also includes the newly-recorded Revolver with Lil Wayne.

A follow up release, Celebration The Video Collection, which promises to feature 47 tracks, will be launched later this week.

Last night’s UK chart rankings also bestowed some success for singing legend Cliff Richard, who’s most recent work and backed by the Shadows, ‘Reunited’, claimed 6th spot on the album chart.

Experienced chart-man Robbie Williams is facing staunch competition for the Christmas No1 album spot – you got it, singer extraordinaire Susan Boyle.

Both singers are trying to crack America for the envied top spot – and unlike Boyle, it won’t be a first attempt for Williams. Williams has never been capable of duplicating the European success in America and is hoping his new album, scheduled for release in early November, will rekindle his fortunes and equate to U.S. superstardom.

Williams’ holiday-timed release, Reality Killed the Radio Star, is set to go head to head with I Dreamed A Dream from Boyle, which will come onto the market two weeks later.

But credits are already predicting doom for Williams’ latest material, with one industry expert even saying that EMI is nuts to have decided to go against Boyle.

Music commentator Paul Gambaccini foretold that there would be no competition: it’s Susan Boyle all the way.

He added that this is not meant to be an insult for Robbie Williams, it’s just that Boyle is the fresh artist and is definitely the story of the year around the world.

Ladbrokes bookmakers have also decided that Boyle will win the contest. They’ve given her album 2-5 odds of making the Christmas No 1 in Britain – with Williams’ getting 20-1 odds.

Mr Gambaccini also explained that Susan Boyle boasts 120 million YouTube hits, and even if only 10% of these individuals buy her album, the numbers are ridiculous. He added that Boyle has got the whole Cowell Machine supporting her.

The Smashing Pumpkins have announced the launch of a new album which will be offered free of charge.

The album, called ‘Teargarden by Kaleidyscope’, consists of 44 new tracks which will be released on the internet at the pace of one track at a time with the first scheduled for the end of October.

Frontman Billy Corgan recently commented the project on his blog.

He said that free will mean free, which means fans won’t have to sign up for anything, jump through a hoop or even give an email address. People will be able to go on the site and download the song or songs they wish and as many times as they wish.

The Smashing Pumpkins have just started recording the album on September 15. Corgon also disclosed the theme of the album is influenced by the tarot card ‘The Fool’s Journey’ and that through this album, the band will get reacquainted with the original psychedelic roots of The Smashing Pumpkins. Corgon said the album will prove to be atmospheric, melodic, heavy, and pretty.

As well as the downloadable free material, the band will release 11 four-song EPs plus a deluxe box set of when the album will be finished.

‘Teargarden by Kaleidyscope’ will be the first occasion where The Smashing Pumpkins release free material. In 2000, the band released ‘Machina II/The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music’ on-line for fans to download.
