Butlins. A typical noisy, slightly shabby holiday camp with little kids running around and hoards of visitors trampling the grounds, yes. But you can start thinking boutique spa hotel.

Butlins has just invested £20m on its latest addition, the Ocean hotel in Bognor Regis, West Sussex. The company has splurged on a state-of-the-art spa and beautiful interior design, in the process creating 90 new jobs, most filled by locals.

The seven-storey hotel has 200 rooms which are completely booked for the next six weeks.

Each floor has a different colour– green, purple, pink, orange and blue – to help children know whether they are on the right floor.

This Butlins is not for minimalists: all rooms have lime green wardrobes and suede sofa-beds, with green and orange bed covers and cerise purple adorning the walls. Rooms for both children and parents are furnished with their own plasma TVs, and the bathrooms are equipped with dimmed lights which change colour in order to relax visitors as they soak.

However, the piece de resistance is a remarkable 670-metre (2,197ft) spa, boasting a snow cave, only the third to be built in the UK.

The resort director at Bognor Regis, Jeremy Pardey, says the prices of the various therapies are geared to the Butlins market, from £19 for a two-hour treatment in the wet room (foot-spa, hydrotherapy pool, disco showers, steam rooms and sauna, plus heated beds) to £125 for two hours of pampering with the Beauty and the Beach facial and massage special.

Eoghan Quigg, the teen “X Factor” star, is said to be preparing for a number of gigs at Butlins holiday camps this summer.

According to the holiday camp operator, the 16-year-old will perform several times in July at its Skegness and Bognor Regis resorts.

Recently, Quigg completed a tour with the Irish band Boyzone, and is said to be preparing for his first solo gig, when he will perform at the Ulster hall.

Shannon Healy, from Derry, said: “My daughters Tara (6) and Lucy (5) were over the moon when we told them they’d see Eoghan Quigg on their holidays,” adding: “They watched Eoghan every week on the ‘X Factor’ and loved him. When Eoghan did his big performance at the Guildhall we couldn’t get down because the crowds were so huge.”

The enthusiastic mum went on to say: “Now on Friday they’ll have a chance to see him perform properly. We had no idea when we booked the holiday that Eoghan would be performing in Skegness. It’s great for him.”

When he was on the “X Factor”, the spiky-haired Quigg won the hearts of thousands of fans, and local councillors hailed him as a borough “ambassador”.

More than 4.5 million British holidaymakers are planning to take traditional holiday camp breaks this summer as the economy and the value of the pound keep them closer to home.

A survey conducted by Travelsupermarket.com has revealed that 10 per cent of the British adults responding indicated they would most likely visit a holiday camp this year.

Bob Atkinson, speaking on behalf of Travelsupermarket.com, said: “The humble holiday camp has come a long way since its invention in the 1950s. The entertainment has been updated to reflect today’s needs. From indoor water parks to spa experiences, sporting activities to performances from X Factor stars and TV personalities, the array of activities on offer caters to all markets.”

In another travel trend found in the study, younger travellers are booking package holiday to Spain in spite of the recession. Although overall bookings to the popular eurozone destination have declined by 23.4 per cent, they are up with younger holidaymakers.

An analysis of 20,000 holiday bookings, conducted by The Co-operative Travel, found that Majorca – which is the number one destination for package holidays from the UK – saw an increase in its share of bookings in the under-30 age group.

The share of bookings seen by Majorca increased by five per cent in the under-21 age group, and by three per cent in the 21-30 group. Ibiza saw an increase in its share of the bookings, of four per cent.
