The star-studded charity track which was recorded for the victims of the Haiti earthquake victims has made its radio debut.

The project spearheaded by British pop music guru Simon Cowell and attracting the participation of 21 of some of the top performing artists today took less than a fortnight to complete for planning to its airing on radio today.

Stars such as Take That, Susan Boyle and Kylie Minogue took part in the making of the cover of Everybody Hurts by American 90s iconic band REM.

Cowell managed to easily pull strings in the business to arrange the single project to take root.

The various singers take turns at being featured as the main vocalist, starting with former X Factor winner Leona Lewis, followed by rock legend Rod Stewart, American R and B singer Mariah Carey, Cheryl Cole, Mika and Canadian performer Michael Buble.

The single was recorded in two locations. Some singers lent their voices for the track in London, while others, such as Robbie Williams, was part of the Los Angeles sessions.

Alexandra Burke — another X Factor winner – as well as James Morrison, were called into Trevor Horn’s Sarm Studios in the London district of Notting Hill – where in 1984, the original fund-raising Band Aid song was recorded.

The other artists that took part the project are Jon Bon Jovi, Miley Cyrus, James Blunt and members of Westlife and JLS and the rising star Susan Boyle.

REM has waived the copyright fees for the use of their songs.

The proceeds of the single will go to two charity organizations: the Sun’s Helping Haiti fund and the Disasters Emergency Committee.

Everybody Hurts will be available for download on February 7 and will be in shops in a cd form the following day.

A benefit concert for Haiti relief on Sunday performed by contemporary rock band Radiohead raised more than £350,000.

The Los Angeles gig, a one-off show, was void of any television cameras and marked Radiohead’s first performance since their performance at the Reading festival last year.

The band, which is in the middle of creating their eighth studio record, had announced the charity gig Friday of last week – only about fifty hours before hitting the stage.

According to the Los Angeles Times, concert tickets were sold at an online auction and each fetched between $475 (£293) and $2,000 (£1,230) each.

The intimate concert, before a select crowd including notable Hollywood players such as fellow performer Justin Timberlake and actresses Drew Barrymore and Jessica Biel, was played in front of only 1,300 people.

The band performed through a dozen hits, two encores as well as a new track – Lotus Flower, which Thom Yorke had previously sang at his solo gig.

Later during the evening, he was handed a card which read “$572,774”, the total amount raised by the amount. Proceeds will go to charity organization Oxfam.

The Radiohead charity Hollywood concert was part of an ongoing fundraiser programme organized by Oxfam which also included auctions for memorabilia donated by other famous bands such as Arctic Monkeys and Coldplay.

Fans have until 2 February to participate in the auction.

Sir Elton John has at last decided to part with his beloved Versace shirts following years of clinging and hoarding for sentimental reasons. The singer is planning to sell them for charity.

Elton’s partner David Furnish claimed that parting with the designer clothing was extremely difficult since they were created by a friend, designer Gianni Versace who died from gun shoot wounds in 1997.

But Furnish said they’d opted to sell the precious clothing in order to raise funds for The Elton John Aids Foundation. Forty-seven-year-old David took part in the Out The Closet charity sale where he has already been through his own wardrobe.

He said that the couple had been holding on to some things. Certain objects they just couldn’t consider giving away, such as silk printed Versace shirts. Elton said of them not to put them for sale as they’re so imbibed of the spirit of Gianni Versace and he was such a fine friend. But still, a few of these ended up into the last sale and they proved to be extremely popular.

Furnish said they just sold so well and they’re very collectable for a die hard fan, or for fashionista.

The filmmaker believes that this edition of the Out The Closet sale is likely to be the last.

In 2002, when the pair sold some items at the event, it raised £400,000.

He insisted it wasn’t difficult for the couple to say goodbye to some of their clothes, adding that when one realises how much of an impact a sale may have on people’s lives, it makes all the difference.

He said he and Elton have several pieces of beautiful clothing in their wardrobe but they cannot all be worn at once. He added that that’s the point of holding on to stuff when others may enjoy it more plus the fact that it raises funds for a charity.

The sale is scheduled for a December 12 opening at the Flower Cellar in London’s Covent Garden. The event will last until December 19 and will be restocked every day until all is sold out, with a clearance sale set for the last day.

Royal Caribbean Cruises, the owner of the very innovative ‘Oasis of the Seas’ has announced that it will host a fundraiser-bash onboard the giant ship when it will officially name the vessel on November 30th.

All proceeds for the charity Make-A-Wish Foundation, which assists kids stricken with life threatening conditions, will come from the sale of 1,000 of the vessel’s staterooms during the fundraiser event.

Charity group official David Williams said his organisation wants to welcome people from across the country in order to support its efforts by participating in this ship’s inaugural cruise.

Bob Dylan has recently confirmed the October launch of a charity Christmas album.

‘Christmas In The Heart’ will feature famous covers such as ‘Winter Wonderland’, and is scheduled for release on October 12. Dylan will be donating all of the funds generated from the album sales to charities including Feeding America.

Other songs on the Christmas special include ‘Little Drummer Boy’, ‘Here Comes Santa Claus’ and ‘Must Be Santa’.

Besides Feeding America, the folk legend will also offer royalties from the release to a yet-to-be-disclosed UK charity as well as a organisation working in the developing world.

In a statement, Dylan remarked that he chose to partner up with Feeding America since they work with poor and hungry individuals in the US during the Christmas season.

“It’s a tragedy that more than 35 million people in this country alone – 12 million of those children – often go to bed hungry and wake up each morning unsure of where their next meal is coming from,” he said. “I join the good people of Feeding America in the hope that our efforts can bring some food security to people in need during this holiday season.”

President and CEO of Feeding America Vicki Escarra thanked the mega star for getting involved with the charity.

“When we reached out to Bob Dylan about becoming involved with our organization, we could never have anticipated that he would so generously donate all royalties from his forthcoming album to our cause,” Escarra said.

“This major initiative from such a world renowned artist and cultural icon will directly benefit so many people and have a major impact on spreading awareness of the epidemic of hunger in this country and around the world.”

We would like to thank www.nme.com for quotes used in this article.

A group of musicians all hailing from Burton are making a comeback to do a one-off show to raise money for charity.

Burton Sinfonia’s class of 2002, a string orchestra, is coming together for one night only for a concert in order to raise cash going to a young musician from the city to play a stringed instrument.

The group of 20 musicians, formerly pupils at de Ferrers Specialist Technology College, Barton under Needwood’s John Taylor High School and Paulet High School, began their careers in Burton and are now either professional musicians or teachers of the performing art.

Event promoter Tilley Hinchley said: “A number of musicians, who all grew up together in Burton, keep in touch and decided that it would be a brilliant idea to get together and play as an orchestra one more time.

“The event is a reunion concert with players travelling from across the UK to play together for the first time in nearly seven years.”

For this concert, the 20 musicians will be accompanied by their former teacher, Andrew Hodkinson, who was convinced to come out of retirement to be the guest conductor at the gig.

The group is scheduled to perform at Burton’s Brewhouse arts centre, in Union Street at 7.30pm on Saturday, September 5. The proceeds from the concert will be given to the Burton and District Arts Council (BADAC) in order to start a bursary programme uniquely dedicated to fund a string musician.

Musician Miss Hinchley said: “We have such talent in Burton and many of our string players would not have become the musicians they are today without the support of local music teachers, music groups and a little financial help too.

“It’s going to be exciting but the whole aim of the evening is to support musicians so they have the same opportunities that we did when we were younger.”

Tickets for the concert are £6 and are on sale at the Brewhouse box office. Please call: 01283 508100.

The British Philharmonic Concert Orchestra will be performing in Shropshire next month to celebrate an anniversary.

The 90th anniversary of the charity organisation Save The Children will be celabrated as well as the achievements of its locally born founder, Eglantyne Jebb, with and concert called Party In The Park.

To be held on September 5, the event is being sponsored by two well-known local businesses, Fullwood and Tudor Griffiths Group. The two hours of light classical music concert will feature a series of guest soloists and will culminate with huge fireworks to be displayed over the Mere.

The founder of Save The Children, Ellesmere-born Eglantyne Jebb, recognised an injustice and fought for the rights of poverty, war and famine stricken children. He created the charity organisation, which volunteers in Africa, in 1919.

Organisers of the concert said: “While children’s universal human rights are yet to be realised, Eglantyne’s achievement put them on the world agenda, a powerful testament to her rare combination of personal courage, eccentric charisma, and humane vision.”

The concert will be held at Cremorne Gardens in Ellesmere, Shropshire.

For tickets visit www.ellesmere.info or the Ellesmere Info Link and The Meres Visitor Centre. Please call 0843 28 99 447 for more details.
Gates open at 6.30pm and the music starts at 7.30pm.
