Britain’s most popular travel website, airflights.co.uk, has experienced a big increase in holidaymakers wanting to make their way to Egypt’s Red Sea resorts this winter.

The trip comparison website claimed that bookings for the North African holiday destination have doubled over the same period in 2008.

A spokesman at airflights.co.uk said that the company looked at the numbers from September 1 to the present. Trips to Sharm El Sheikh (SSH) have been exceptionally popular, with Hurghada (HRG) coming in second spot for Brits.

Taba and Marsa Alam demonstrated to be strong performers in terms of hotel bookings, but the top destination on the Red Sea currently is definitively Sharm for Britons.

Management at the website gives credit mostly to budget flight availability plus weaker British currency for the jump in demand for Sharm flights and accommodation bookings. This situation makes vacationers opt for all-inclusive hotels on the Red Sea instead of the traditionally popular destinations of Cyprus, Lanzarote, Tenerife and Spain.

The fixed all-inclusive hotels prices have incited British families to choose that option as Sharm definitively offers good value to the customer.

The website expects to see strong bookings for the Red Sea destinations right through November and December with a peak for the Christmas period as well.

Averaging 8 hours of sunshine a day plus temperatures being around 25 degrees Celsius in the daytime, Sharm becomes a fantastic destination to soak up the sun and relax.

Airflights.co.uk provides travellers with budget airfare to holiday destinations in Europe and elsewhere, including trips to Sharm, Marrakech, Kos, Malaga, Alicante, Zante, Madeira, Monastir, Corfu, Heraklion Malta, Izmir, Bodrum, Paphos, Rhodes, Kefalonia, Dalaman, Larnaca and Chania.

Airflights.co.uk also has a selection of long haul flights for Orlando, Banjul, Goa, Cancun, and Puerto Plata.

Britain’s roads and highways will bear the brunt of this weekend with the exodus created by the bank holiday.

British Airways has also forecasted that 1.9 million travellers will use its terminals at its seven UK airports, including Stansted, Heathrow and Gatwick – maybe 50,000 less passengers than in 2008.

“There is less business travel over the bank holiday period, but you would expect there to be some reflection of the economic circumstances in the bank holiday figures,” said a BAA spokesman.

Delays for drivers are to be expected, with predictions for the “busiest traffic of the year”, with 14million vehicles on the roads. Almost 12 million people are expected to go about within the UK over the weekend, with almost 2 million going abroad.

“The trend towards more Britons holidaying in the UK will help to produce the busiest traffic of the year, with congestion likely to rise by a third on average,” said an AA spokesman.

A poll by Visit England says that 11.9 million Britons were scheduling a trip with one night or more away over a two-week period which includes the bank holiday, up 25% from 2007. The AA claimed the events scheduled over the weekend, such as the Reading Festival, could add major travel woes.

“It’s going to be very busy on the roads. As well as families heading off before schools go back, there’s also a full schedule of music festivals, airshows, sports fixtures and other major events,” said AA patrol of the year Stewart Topp.

“The worst of the traffic will be when people head home on bank holiday Monday evening and then return to work on the Tuesday.”

he French coastal region called the Vendée is a fun place. Located south of Brittany, it has Atlantic beaches that stretch for miles. Campsites are plenty to offer families a great stay amidst nature. Sailors and local fishermen give the ocean a saltier texture, especially at Les Sables d’Olonne, from where the round-the-world sailing race Vendée Globe’s lunatics sets out.

At Le Puy-du-Fou in Les Epesses, offers Europe’s best historical theme park. And it is located right in the middle of the country side with its beautiful landscape of pastures, woods and hedges.

The park is famous for historical reasons; the Vendée war happened when, in 1793, poor peasants in western France had had enough of the French Revolution. They organised themselves, fought Republican soldiers, won, lost and were subsequently massacred for their impertinence in obstructing the progress in the name of liberty.

“The Vendée will be burned, devastated and depopulated,” said the revolutionary government at the time. Conservative numbers put the final death toll near 200,000. Execution techniques included ropping naked men and women together and then throwing them in the Loire. These were called “Republican marriages”.

These are useful information for visitors:

Historial de la Vendée, Les Lucs-sur-Boulogne. Call: 0033 251 476161 or visit www.vendee.fr. Opening days are Tues-Sun.

Refuge de Grasla, Les Brouzils, Call; 0033 251 429620 or visit: www.refugedegrasla.fr. It’s open everyday until September 13.

Logis de la Chabotterie, St Sulpice-le-Verdon. Call: 0033 251 428100 or visit: www.vendee.fr. Open daily.

The nearest airport is at Nantes and Ryanair (www.ryanair.com) offers service from Liverpool and East Midlands. Brittany Ferries (0871 244 0744; www.brittany-ferries.co.uk) offers a Portsmouth-St Malo shuttle. It’s a two hours and 30 minutes drive from St Malo to Montaigu.

As an example, the price of a family meal (two adults and two children), including a bottle of wine and two soft drinks at a local restaurant comes up to an average of £31.39 in Spain. In comparison, the same meal is £57.85 in Brighton.

Furthermore, the average cost of ten popular holiday items, such as a bottle of lager, sun cream or a cup of tea was 38 per cent cheaper in Spain than in Brighton.

The best deal at the moment: Salou’s Aparthotel Golden Avenida Suites are handily placed close to the Costa Dorada’s top attraction, the PortAventura theme park. Avenida Suites offers a Kidzone club, playgrounds with fun slides, a drop-in den, and a splashpool.

Seven nights of self-catering at the Avenida Park starts at £759 per family of four. Departing Gatwick on September 29. This price includes return flights, transfers, accommodation, and fuel supplements.

Many of the top surfers in Britain’s have recently signed up to help raise awareness of the great conservation work done by the National along the Devon and Cornwall coast.

The Surf Ambassadors will ride waves with the National Trust oak leaf on their boards and promote the work of the National Trust with surf sessions, encouraging people of all ages to get into the water as well as championing their cause through school visits.

National Trust surf project co-coordinator and five times British Women’s Champion Robyn Davies said: “Protecting the environment is important to most surfers and these guys jumped at the chance to say it more publicly.

“Having the support of these five Surf Ambassadors is great news and they‘ll help tell the story of the National Trust’s work on the coast and what it means to them as year-round users of the sea,” she added.

The top surfing team, made up of three men and two women, possesses a deep passion for protecting the coast they know so well in Devon and Cornwall.

The National Trust manages more than a third (370 miles) of the Devon and Cornwall coastline including many of the best surfing beaches.

Alan Stokes (the British number One), Celine Gehert (coach to the British women’s surf team), Daniel Joel (one of Britain’s best Big Wave surfers) Jayce Robinson and Kathleen Spears are the members of this year’s ambassadors and are all volunteering their time for free.

Special eco-surf academies will be run by the ambassadors in partnership with National Trust wardens; the team will also be spending the morning doing conservation work on the dunes, cliffs and heathlands overlooking the water, and the afternoon appreciating their efforts from the sea.
