The millionaire’s daughter who transported looters around London throughout the summer riots was convicted of burglary today.

Laura Johnson, aged 20 and of Orpington in south-east London, previously denied her charges and claimed that she had been acting under duress. While at Inner London Crown Court, Miss Johnson, a student, also had herself convicted of handling a TV looted from Currys – although she did not steal it herself.

The judge warned Johnson, who was cleared of a charge of stealing and handling both cigarettes and alcohol from a BP garage, to expect jail time. Her co-defendant, who is a 17-year-old male who can’t be named yet for legal reasons, may have been cleared of one burglary but was convicted of another.

Addressing the two defendants, Judge Patricia Lees commented that they had been convicts of incredibly serious offences that appear worse than usual considering they were committed during a time of civil unrest in the UK capital London during last summer. The court was told that University of Exeter student Johnson is extremely intelligent and well-educated by solicitors representing her.

The millionaire’s daughter explained her fear of refusing to join Emmanuel Okubote – aged 20 and a convicted dealer of the harmful drug crack cocaine dealer referred to by his nickname, T-Man – on a cross-city mission of theft.

Three different theatre versions of the F Scott Fitzgerald classic The Great Gatsby will be seen later in 2012, it has been announced.

The Great Gatsby will open at Wilton’s Music Hall in April before Gatz’s opens at the Noel Coward Theatre in the West End in June. Lastly, a musical take on the novel will open at north London’s King’s Head Theatre in August.

First published in 1925, Fitzgerald’s book is regarded as a literary classic and one of the great American novels. Set in Long Island, an affluent area east of Manhattan, the story is mainly about the dreams and delusions that the nouveau riche had in the 1920s.
The musical is to be directed by Linnie Reedman, the Young Vic Genesis director, with Joe Evans, an award-winning composer lined up to pen the production’s score. As of yet, casting for the production at Wilton hasn’t been decided.

The announcement follows the six-hour-long off-Broadway production that became a hit in the last months of 2011. Recently, The Great Gatsby’s popularity has soared – which is mostly down to a new-spin off book that tells of the fortunes of Pamela, Daisy Buchanan’s daughter.

As well as this, Australian movie director Baz Luhrmann, the man behind Moulin Rouge and Romeo & Juliet, has also began production on his new film adaptation that stars UK actress Carey Mulligan and Spider-man actor Tobey Maguire. Leonardo DiCaprio will star as the titular Jay Gatsby with a release scheduled for Christmas this year.

The UK is pushing on with plans to increase the number of bicycle users.

In the past year, the government and in particular, the London Mayor Boris Johnson, have been actively pursuing a path away from vehicle travel as they work towards objectives in the area of environmental sustainability.

With the recent budget and impending VAT rises sure to hit the pockets of the average UK consumer hard, many people are now contemplating a return to pedal power in a bid to stay fit and save the environment.

In 2008, a survey by the Department for Transport (Dft) showed that the number of cyclists in the UK had been in decline since the 1950s. That year, it found that just eight per cent of individuals across the country said they were regular bicycle users, hopping on at least three times per week. Those people who used their bike once a week numbered around 14 per cent, while 8 per cent used it once a month. The majority, 69 per cent, said they used a bike less than once a year. Men were more frequent cyclists than women, the most popular age bracket being those aged 11 to 16.

Now that the UK looks committed to a path of petrol-less travel, the interest in bikes has been slowly improving. The economic hardships forecast for the short-term future will also lead many people to road bikes, and there are several websites featuring the best road-going products.

Road-bikes.co.uk is a site dedicated to those who already have a road bike or those who are considering buying. With a host of books on maintenance and advice for users, the website is a valuable resource for anyone looking at keeping their car in the garage and getting behind the handle bars.

The latest threat of strikes across the London Tube system has seen the public once again turn to public transport.

While members of the RMT transport union, who staff the Tube lines, have voted overwhelming to take some form of industrial action, the average traveller is returning to the more traditional public transport options of rail and bus links to get around the capital.

The RMT is liaising with fellow transport union TSSA to decide on the next course for action, but both are fearful that cost cutting polices could result in the scrapping of some 140 ticket offices across the London Underground, with job losses estimated at around 800 from areas including maintenance, ticketing and inspectors.

Fortunately, a new website, publictransport.co.uk, provides a thorough overview of the services available in London as alternatives to using the Tube, with helpful sections on both Bus Travel and Train Travel. Showcasing a range of options that are found not just in the capital but across the UK as well, the website offers an insight into how public transport systems work and how envied the British programmes are abroad.

The UK government is also committed to steering consumers back to public transportation as part of a wider bid to reduce the overall carbon footprint of the country, with London at the forefront of environmentally friendly technology and user-friendly public transport systems that reduce the number of vehicles on the road.

Metrosexuals have finally discovered the joys of pedicures according to data which shows a rise in male spa treatments in London.

Long considered the sole domain of pampered women, British males are warming to the concept of seeing a pedicurist to enjoy healthy, good looking feet. Now, thanks to pedicurist.co.uk, there is online advice and information for both sexes to better understand the process and benefit involved.

A Pedicurist someone who specialises in the cosmetology of the feet, and one who can, by soaking, cleaning and massaging, leave you feeling refreshed and relaxed.

Simply put, a good pedicure is good for your health, with your feet probably the most used part of your body and accordingly one which can wear out easily in old age. As with any body part, proper conditioning to ensure good circulation and sensation will have not only immediate rewards but long term benefits such as being able to avoid dry or cracked skin.

Ask anyone who has a regular treatment and they will attest to the wonderful feeling of cleanliness, freshness and relaxation that can be provided in the hands of pedicurists. While nail or hair salons are the most common location, there are numerous providers who can readily turn you into a covert.

For those unsure or unwilling to venture into beauty salons, it is simple enough to find a good quality pedicurist online, with private pedicures offered all over Britain. Pedicurist.co.uk can help you find a mobile beauty therapist who can come to your home or even your next office or social function.

The gloomy outlook surrounding the economy has left many job seekers in the English capital nervously hunting for work. Just this week official forecasts said the UK job market could be in for another round of cuts and lay-offs, with London jobs always at the forefront. There are now some 2.47 million unemployed in Britain – with the rate rising again last quarter to now sit at 7.9 per cent.

Thankfully, for anyone who is searching for a new job in London, there is help at hand thanks to the online resources and information provided at londonjobs.org.uk, a new website which offers general advice, top tips and useful background on how to go about finding employment in the often chaotic capital business world.

Whether it is casual, part-time or full-time employment you are after, you will need to familiarise yourself with the company profile and the application process. Make sure you research the position and the organisation you intend to join thoroughly – this shows a dedication to the employer and a commitment to the role – and of course, ensure that any interviews are attended on time. Given its sheer size and importance, applying for jobs in London can be a gruelling and often lengthy process, so it is important to stay positive and motivated.

The other important factor is making sure you stand out. Try to emphasise what makes you different and an asset. Work on your interview technique and aim to leave your interviewers impressed or better, stunned. Being confident and relaxed is the key, and you can find out how best to achieve this approach through the London jobs online specialist at londonjobs.org.uk.

The residents of the world’s major cities have declared that climate change is their biggest worry according to a new survey by HSBC.

The issue is a global trend in all large urban concentrations except for a few of the bigger cities inside the United States, who see the economy as a far more pressing issue, says the bank survey. Climate change only came in at third place in these cities, as terrorism was also ranked higher.

Climate change was the number one concern by over two-thirds of those living in Hong Kong, while fellow super-cities such as Paris, London, Vancouver, Toronto and Sao Paolo all said the same thing. The survey polled 2,044 residents in urban environments.

In the United States, Washington, New York and Los Angeles were all included in the poll which reflects the nervousness held by the world about global fears and the more insular outlook held by Americans over their security.

The responses were partially attributed to the effects of the global economic downturn having more of an impact on urban residents in the United States than in other parts of the world, but also of the more progressive approach to environmental sustainability taken by countries such as Australia, Canada, France and the UK.

Portfolios for United States residents were affected to the tune of 56 per cent by the recession, while Paris reported a 55 per cent effect. These two were well ahead of London, 45 per cent, and Hong Kong, where just 19 per cent of pollsters said they were damaged by the downturn.

Oscar award-winner Sandra Bullock has withdrawn from the UK premier of her blockbuster The Blind Side following allegations that her husband has been cheating on her. Reports emanating from the US claim that the actresses’ husband has been two-timing Bullock with a tattoo model.

Her absence from the British premier was, according to Warner Bros, for unforeseen circumstances. Bullock famously took home the Best Actress Oscar for her leading role in the movie, which was scheduled to debut next Tuesday in London.

In Touch magazine claimed that Bullock’s motorbike loving husband, Jesse James, has advised reporters he had been romancing Michelle “Bombshell” McGee while Bullock was on-set filming, and that his marriage to the 45-year-old actress was finished. McGee, who has also apparently christened James “Vanilla Gorilla” in reference to his sizeable manhood, stated that she was unaware that the couple was still married, with James hinting that he and Bullock had separated.

McGee spoke of first meeting James after receiving an email from him inquiring if she might wish to model for his company, West Coast Choppers. The sultry skin model said that it soon became apparent that James was after more than a modeling contract. After a brief tour of the company warehouse James allegedly took McGee to his office and locked the door behind them. The pair slept together five or six times and continued to send each other explicit text messages for some weeks.

The allegations have been seen by many as a continuation of the Oscar curse, which has plagued the Best Actress winner for years. Kate Winslet, Reese Witherspoon and Hilary Swank all separated from their partners after receiving the gong.

UK commercial airline bmi has revealed details regarding the launch of new flights out of Heathrow Airport in London to Vienna later this year.

The new flights are scheduled to start on March 28 and Austrian Airlines are said to be joining in the operations.

Bmi customers will be able to choose amongst five flights per day scheduled between Heathrow and the Austrian capital. With this move, bmi will offer the largest number of flights between the London airport and Vienna.

The new flights will be part of the airline’s re-launch of its Heathrow operations.

Bmi is expected to post a heavy loss in 2010. The carrier as then decided to remove all business class sections on its domestic (UK) flights only and replacing them with all-economy class areas.

The company is also introducing a new Flexible Economy fare, which will give passengers teh use of business lounges, guaranteed seating at the front of the plane as well as free in flight food and drink.

German flagship carrier Lufthansa took charge of bmi in July 2009 following the sale of 50% of the total stake held by former chairman Sir Michael Bishop for £220m.

The German brand had been considering selling its stake in bmi, with Virgin Atlantic being extremely interested in a new acquisition in order to acquire more slots at Heathrow, but withdrew bmi from the market in November.
