Manchester City’s blushes were saved after Aleksandar Kolarov’s free-kick rescued a point against Italian outfit Napoli, on what was their debut Champions League match.

Roberto Mancini’s side might have overcome all those put before them this season domestically, but they found this match a lot harder against an Italian side. City were returning to European football after an absence of 43 years and it might have ended up being memorable for them for all the wrong reasons after Edinson Cavani finished off what was a swift counter-attack and handed Napoli the lead around the 69 minute mark.

Kolarov spared any blushes for his side with his wicked, curling strike six minutes later however, with Germans Bayern Munich and the Yellow Submarines Villarreal still to come, their group, Group A, isn’t going to become any easier any time soon. Mancini demanded a “fast start” from City in his programme notes, expecting only the best before kick-off. The best is almost what he got once Samir Nasri fired his shot just wide while Edin

Dzeko came even closer still with a drive that beat the keeper but zipped by the post.
Napoli appeared happy to defend, in typical Italian style, and made counter attacks that almost won them the game. Thankfully though, Kolarov salvaged the Mancunians a point and maintained City’s unbeaten record for the 2011/2012 campaign.

The story of Batman was told on stage this week at the premier of a new show that is capable of touring the planet until 2016.

The show, named Batman Live, opened in the city of Manchester on Tuesday, appearing to go much smoother that originally predicted after the Batmobile had crashed on stage last week during rehearsals.

Although it was meant to be on public display, a spare had to brought in from Manchester city centre. Understandably, producers are incredibly keen to avoid any comparisons with the cursed Broadway Spider-Man musical, a production that has been riddled by problems.

Unlike Spider-Man though, the Batman show isn’t a musical, with the Batmobile’s accident only minor in comparison to problems that caused Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark’s opening to be postponed a shocking six times as a result of injuries to cast and crew members, as well as deaths.

We hope it won’t ever happen again, said Batman Live’s set designer Es Devlin to gathering reporters when commenting on the Batmobile’s problems. Luckily, there were two cars in Manchester, Devlin continued, but you couldn’t have put one of them on stage.

The show has a 43-strong cast made up of actors and also circus-trained acrobats. In a rare attempt that sees a theatrical production being staged in a packed-out arena, Batman Live takes on the mission of telling the story of how the caped crusader and Robin “The Boy Wonder” ended up becoming a team.

The south western city of Bristol has been recognised as the city that purchases the most Viagra pills in the UK, new figures have revealed.

According to a new report put together by pharmacies across the country, Bristol men have the most problems with erectile dysfunction drug. However, rather embarrassingly, its neighbour from the West Country Swindon is officially the place where the least number of the famous blue pills are sold.

Other areas in the country where bedroom prowess might flop include Solihull, London’s Leah Valley and Southampton. Out of the top five, the only city from the north was Chesterfield – where men obviously seem to be having problems as the town with the Crooked Spire limped into fifth place. As well as this though, those in Blackpool also seem to be having the same problems that Southampton’s rival Portsmouth are also experiencing.

After Swindon, other parts of the country where Viagra sales are few are the university haven of Cambridge, Watford and Hertfordshire. As well as these however, Bury, Aberdeen in Scotland and Ely also made their way into the hall of fame like those in Manchester, Poole, Welsh city Swansea and Wisbech.

Shona Scott, who is commercial manager for Tesco’s pharmacy department, commented that there hadn’t been a strong demand across Britain for erectile dysfunction remedies since they went on sale a couple of months in September. Despite this however, Bristol has been the city where the demand has been the highest.

At present, it is estimated that nearly two and a half million men in the UK, mostly over 40, suffer from erectile disfunction.

The complete scripts to Little Britain can be had for just £11.49, or pay just £6.99 to try out some of the tasty treats on offer in Low Fat Meals in Minutes from celebrity chef Ainsley Harriott.

Bargain hunters looking to save money on doing up their home can choose from Manchester, blankets and duvet sets. For the final touch, unbeatable prices can be had on dishwashers and the latest Dyson vacuum cleaners. For those with a home office, mouse pads, labelling machines, staplers, envelopes and stamps are all here. There are even low-cost everyday items such as shower gel, shampoo, sanitary pads and towels for the bathroom, while kitchen lovers can find a huge selection of glassware and crockery.

The most famous street and TV set in the history of British television could be scheduled for the wrecking ball.

The iconic outdoor set of Manchester’s Coronation Street, Rovers Return pub included, is being seriously considered to be demolished and rebuilt close to Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium.

The change has been prompted following ITV negotiations had been reopened to discuss the move of its Manchester offices.

The relocation of the pub and cobbled streets of the world’s most famous and longest running TV show to the £600m MediaCityUK project in Salford Quays has been discussed after the appointment of Archie Norman as ITV chairman.

The new location for both the ITV base in Manchester city centre as well as the Coronation Street set would be moved to a abandoned dock site, immediately across the water from the new northern base for the BBC.

The current set has been an iconic location for all of Britain for almost 50 years as well as the setting for memorable television scenes, some, even historic.

The street’s most notorious recent event may be the murder of the character of Charlie Stubbs by his girlfriend Tracey Barlow, the fictional daughter of Ken Barlow, the show’s most enduring resident.

Coronation street was the spot where countless cat-fights, several of them involving the former Rover landlady Bet Lynch.

According to developers Peel Media, the company hired for the MediaCityUK project, the area that has been “pre-allocated” to the station.

Miss England has been apprehended by police for allegedly assaulting another beauty queen during a jealous cat-fight stemming from involvement with her Gladiator boyfriend.

The 21-yearl-old Miss England, Rachel Christie, is reported to have punched in the face 24 -year-old Sara Beverley Jones, Miss Manchester, at a Manchester nightclub.

Miss Christie had showed up at the party in the company of her boyfriend, TV star Tornado aka David McIntosh, when the fight broke out.

The argument between the two beauty queens occurred apparently because the 22-year-old former Royal Marine had in the past also been the boyfriend of Miss Manchester winner.

Miss Jones later commented on Twitter that she had been attacked in the Manchester nightclub.

Miss England (Christie), whose uncle is ex-sprinter Linford Christie, was taken into police custody for allegedly assaulting her ‘colleague’ and was questioned by investigators before bailing herself out.

A Greater Manchester Police official said that around 12.55am on November 2, police received a call for a fight in a nightclub on Deansgate Court, in Manchester City Centre.

According to the official, an incident had developed after the 24-year-old Miss Manchester gotten physically violent towards another woman present in the club and the altercation resulted in her getting punched in the face several times.

Miss Manchester was taken to Hope Hospital where she was treated for minor facial injuries and was subsequently discharged.

Police said that a 21-year-old woman (Miss England) had been arrested on suspicion of assault and had been released on bail. The police spokesperson said she is due for court in January 2010.

Miss Christie is scheduled to represent England in South Africa next month at the Miss World competition and has her sights on the heptathlon at the 2012 London Olympics.

Gaga is soon to launch her Monster Ball Tour.

Lady GaGa has revealed details of a world tour which is scheduled start in Canada in November and will arrive in the UK next February.

The British part of her tour will kick off in Manchester’s MEN Arena. Her UK dates will be the pop-art singer’s first European shows in 2010.

As well, Lady GaGa is also set to be re-releasing a reworked version of her debut album ‘The Fame’ scheduled for November 23. The two disc album is titled ‘The Fame Monster’, which features eight news tracks , including single ‘Bad Romance’, plus the original album.

Lady Gaga’s announcement comes after a difficult period when she had to cancel her previously planned Fame Kills North American tour which she was to co-headline with Kanye West.

Lady Gaga had claimed creative differences for the cancellation but most of the media put the blame on West’s behaviour during this year’s edition of the MTV Music Video Awards.

On September 13, the notorious rapper barged onstage as young country star Taylor Swift was carrying out her acceptance speech – a move that many have deemed unacceptable. Despite multiple apologies, both publicly and privately made to the country singer, West’s popularity has continued to dip.

The world tour will start on Canadian soil with dates in Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa, before continuing to the US.

Lady GaGa will play these UK dates:

Manchester, MEN Arena (February 18)
Liverpool, Liverpool Arena (24)
London, O2 Arena (26)
Glasgow, SECC (March 1)
Cardiff, CIA (3)
Newcastle, Newcastle Arena (4)
Birmingham, LG Arena (5)
Sheffield, Sheffield Arena (7)
Nottingham, Nottingham Arena (8)

Tickets for these shows will be available starting at 9am on Friday October 30. Please check availability at NME.COM/TICKETS or call 0871 230 1094.
Here’s the list of North American dates:

Montreal, Bell Centre (November 27)
Toronto, Air Canada Center (28)
Ottawa, Scotiabank Place (29)
Boston, Wang Center (December 1, 2)

Lord Adonis was addressing the subject during a conference organised by the transport consultancy Steer Davies Gleave, as some regional cities set up a lobbying group to call for direct connection to future high-speed rail lines. Many of the places have expressed concerns over plans of an initial line offering service only from London to Birmingham and Manchester. The other cities, namely Sheffield, Leeds, Liverpool, Newcastle, Glasgow and Edinburgh are afraid to be left out.

A key factor in the planning for a new UK line is that trains must be able to use both a high-speed line and the existing ordinary rail network, Lord Adonis explained at the transport conference.

Lord Adonis’s idea would make the new UK high-speed system similar to the French system, where an excess of 50% of the distance travelled every year by TGV high-speed trains is on the regular rail track network.

This differs from Japan’s Shinkansen high-speed train system which runs only on specially built, segregated tracks.

Lord Adonis told the Financial Times that trains able to use both the conventional and high-speed networks would be needed so that there’s a journey-time saving between London and Scotland from the outset, even if a proportion of the route was on the existing track.

Research by Network Rail, proprietor of the UK’s rail network, suggests the first route will possibly be a single spine to link London, Birmingham and Manchester, prior to enlarging the system to cover Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Many of the concerned cities forming the HSRUK lobby group are among those most interested by such a route.
