The ex-wife of Paul McCartney, Heather Mills, has appeared before an employment tribunal hearing to answer questions relating to her alleged reneging of an offer to assist her former nanny with a breast enlargement operation.

Mills, who has been thankfully out of the media spotlight in recent months, was accused of lying to her ex-childminder and of continuing the untruths. The nanny claimed that the once rosy relationship between the two women became increasingly hostile after Mills separated from the former Beatle four years ago.

Sara Trimble brought the case before the tribunal yesterday, where she is seeking compensation from Ms Mills on the basis of unfair dismissal and sexual discrimination. She alleges that Mills became abusive and rude to her which ultimately culminated in Mills refusing to pay £4,000 for the enhancement procedure in 2008.

Mills claims that she was asked by Trimble for a loan but then baulked when she found out what it was for, suggesting that she did not want be involved in something that could have a negative effect on Trimble’s hormones or her relationship with her boyfriend. This was called an unpleasant lie by the prosecution who argued it showed further underhanded intimidation.

Trimble worked for Mills from 2004, where she earned £260 each week to take care of McCartney and Mills’ daughter Beatrice, now aged six.

Mills, who made £125 million from the divorce settlement, said she felt as if she had been betrayed by someone she once considered a friend who was looking to literally cash in on her wealth.

Paul McCartney will head to Washington DC and be honoured with the Gershwin Prize For Popular Music in spring 2010.

Offered by the US Library Of Congress, this will mark the first time a non-American will be awarded the prize and the only third time its been given out since it launch in 2008.

American legends Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder were respectively the first and second recipients of the award.

Librarian Of Congress’ James H Billington said of the forthcoming honour that the lasting effect of the ex-Beatle on music was the element that made him stand out.

Billington added that no other song writer and composer has had a more transformative and indelible effect on popular music.

It is also expected that the award presentation will feature an all-star tribute performance which will coincide with McCartney receiving the prize. Although the specific date still needs to be scheduled the performer has announced that he give a performance at the event.

McCartney said the Gershwin Prize For Popular Music represented a huge honour for him.

The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song is bestowed to a performer or composer for their lifelong contributions to music.

Paul Simon was confirmed as the award’s initial recipient on March 1, 2007. He received his prize during a Concert Gala at the Warner Theatre in Washington, on May 23, 2007.

On September 3, 2008, Stevie Wonder was announced as the second recipient. President Barack Obama presented the famous singer with the prize at a ceremony at the White House on February 25, 2009.

The Gershwin Prize joined other prizes bestowed by the Library Of Congress including the Kluge and the Living Legend prizes.

Hyde Park and Buckingham Palace might be used as venues for a series of free performances featuring some of rock music’s top legends. Londoner’s can expect to see the likes of the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and Led Zeppelin as they are said to take part in the cultural celebrations surrounding the forthcoming London Summer Olympic Games.

Despite the combined ages of the old masters, easily running in the several hundred years, Ed Vaizey, the Conservative shadow arts minister, said the famous music acts should be included in the festivities of the Cultural Olympiad’s series of events for the 2012 Games, thus joining the new cultural guard.

Ed Vaizey added that a programme of free shows in Hyde Park, or Buckingham Palace is in the works. As a side note, the 2012 Olympic Games arrive just in time to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond jubilee, hence using Buckingham Palace for the occasion.

He added that Britons from all over could witness events featuring iconic artists as well as Britain’s exciting new musicians as they would perform up and down the country.

Mr Vaizey highlighted the importance of adding popular, well established and commercial performances to the cultural programme which would typically feature arts which are subsidized such as theatre and opera.

He added that, in order to present successful Cultural Olympiads which should gather as many souls as possible, organisers feel it is vital to include the participation of the popular and commercial sector of the creative scene.

Commenting on a future Conservative government’s arts policy, Mr Vaizey said that Britons should expect short-term pains while the new administration works to get the country’s finances back in order. He added that the front-line arts should be protected as much as possible, adding that he is pledging to keep the current policy at national museums and galleries, meaning free admission.

Paul McCartney proved to the world that he’s still capable of grandiosity. Last Saturday night, at the FedEx field outside Washington DC, Sir McCartney sang 21 Beatles songs during a three hour lovefest which spanned his long career.

The former Beatle is the definition of a legend, but this image quickly fades once he starts chatting, showing his capacity to be the friendliest rock star on Earth.

Why the 67-year-old musical god continues to tour huge venues around the world? He’s damn good at it, and with the exception of some pyrotechnics during “Live and Let Die,” he does it in a simple fashion void of gimmicks.

After noting that the Beatles’ first U.S. concert more than four decades ago was in Washington, McCartney added, “We’ve got bigger amps now!”

Time has taken its toll on the voices of his contemporaries. Some have lost the magic behind their voice, but Sir Paul’s remain crisp and tuned to perfection; he belted out “Got to Get You Into My Life” with passion to spare and was flawless during “Blackbird.”

He masterly played with acoustic and electric guitar, piano, ukulele, mandolin, along with his trademark bass, all through which he maintained a virtuous flow between Beatles, Wings and his solo material.

Another reason why McCartney is still at it is that he clearly enjoys it. He fooled around with the audience, endlessly pointing to individual spectators and jumping from centre stage to his piano.

Most importantly, McCartney has a sense of responsibility towards his fans. The last performing Beatle has become the embodiment of dozens of hits, a cultural phenomenon and the world’s most important rock band. Paul McCartney is not only a musician, he IS Rock and Roll.

Pedestrians passing by the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York were surprised earlier this week when they saw Sir Paul McCartney on the building’s rooftop, in a gig that was reminiscent of the last live performance by the Beatles – on the roof of the Apple building, four decades ago.

Sixty-seven-year-old McCartney played for 20 minutes on the Ed Sullivan Theater marquee, which was part of his appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman. This was his first time appearing as a guest on Letterman’s popular chat show.

Thousands of passers-by stopped in front of the theater to watch McCartney’s mini-concert, which included such popular songs as Coming Up, Band On The Run, Helter Skelter, Let Me Roll It and Back in the USSR.

On February 9, 1964, the Beatles made their debut on US television on the Ed Sullivan Show. Sir Paul described to Letterman his memories of the nerve-racking experience waiting for the curtain to rise.

He said: “The audience was out there and we were very new to America, loving it but a little bit scared. I had to do Yesterday – my song – on my own, and I’d never done this, I’d always had the band with me, but they said ‘You’re doing Yesterday’.”

McCartney went on to say: “So I’m standing there and the floor manager, the guy on the curtain, came up and said: ‘Are you nervous?’ I said no, and he said: ‘You should be – there’s 73 million people watching’.”

McCartney was in New York for the opening of his US tour.
