Many are suggesting that this could be the year of the revival of the British holiday park, as increased numbers of Britons stay closer to home for their holidays – to save money during the recession and to take advantage of the hot, sunny weather that has been predicted.

“We have already seen holiday inquiries 20 per cent up on last year,” noted Caroline Guffogg, the marketing director for South Lakeland Parks, an operator that offers lodges as well as static caravans in nine holiday parks in the Lake District.

She added: “Our buyers will benefit from renters, which will help cover the costs of their own home.”

The tourist organisation VisitBritain has estimated that there will be five million more holidays taken in the UK this year, which means that there are plenty of potential renters for holiday park accommodations.

According to Guffogg, park accommodation is significantly different today than it was in the past, although static caravans are still available. She commented that the big interest now is in lodges: “They are proper homes, with all mod cons, and have become increasingly sophisticated.”

South Lakeland Parks has introduced the ecolodge, a new innovation that features rainwater harvesting, solar panel heating for hot water and intelligent lighting.

British holidaymakers concerned about their finances during the economic downturn, and who live in London, won’t even have to leave the city this year for their summer break.

Bovril, which produces a drink that has been favoured by UK campers for years, is opening the capital’s – and Britain’s – first “Extreme Urban Campsite” to help city dwellers enjoy a break without spending what they would normally on a traditional holiday.

The campsite is situated at an elevation of 230 feet, atop a building in Central London’s Shoe Lane. It is being trialled by Bovril to help those who don’t have the money or the time to take a break in the countryside or abroad this year.

Bovril has commented that it is committed to helping Britons enjoy both rural and urban outdoor spaces and that if the feedback on the new urban campsite is positive, more campsites in cities around the country will be opened.

The campsite launch comes as the number of Britons opting for holidays in the UK is on the rise due to the economy.

The Camping and Caravanning Club has reported that its advanced bookings are 30 per cent higher at this point than last year at the same time. The Club experienced an increase of 50 per cent in occupancy rates over Easter across its 109 Club Sites in the UK.

Jon Dale, speaking on behalf of The Camping and Caravanning Club, commented: “Camping has always played a big part in the British outdoors and our latest figures only help demonstrate the fact that camping and caravanning is becoming all the more popular.”
