Tesco and Sainsburys halt all Scottish online orders

Posted on December 14, 2010

Distribution across Scotland is having to be backlogged after heavy snows caused days of transport chaos.

As well as this, the UK’s main supermarkets and their online shops have also had to stop taking orders in the build up to Christmas due to the bad weather. Three of the UK’s leading companies, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Asda,  were forced to halt orders or suspend deliveries last week after wintry weather brought Scotland’s transport network to a complete standstill; the consequences of which involve being backlogged with deliveries.

However, it is not just the supermarkets that have been hit where it hurts as couriers including the likes of Parcel Force are also struggling to keep up with current post and sorting last week’s mess out.

As does not need to be highlighted for the supermarket giants, Christmas is without doubt the busiest spell of the year for shopping online. As Sainsbury’s suspended its Scottish deliveries, Tesco’s Direct website has also been pushed to stop taking orders from customers north of the border.

In similar news, Asda Direct has warned it will be unable to deliver larger than usual items like furniture this week, as well as over Christmas, and has already stopped taking in-store collection orders.

Online shopping haven Amazon and its rival Firebox are also suffering similar problems as they are both unable to guarantee that next-day delivery can be kept as promised due to the couriers being overstretched. However, they have not gone as far as Boots, which has entirely suspended its next day service.
