Two thirds of British motorists deterred by costs

Posted on February 15, 2011

At least two thirds of UK drivers have admitted record fuel prices, as well as the rising costs of car insurance, have indefinitely taken a toll on their attitudes towards motoring.

A comparison site, moneysupermarket.com, asked site users if rising insurance and also fuel costs would have an affect on the choice of their next car. Almost 40% say that they will select a much more fuel efficient models for their next vehicle, at the same time one in ten, around 11%, are set to buy one that’s cheaper to insure. As well as this, another 8% say that they’ll rely on public transport instead of combatting costs.

Mr Pete Harrison, a car insurance expert for moneysupermarket.com explained how,  with escalating fuel prices, motorists are being hit hard in the pocket. He added that it comes as no surprise to him that most people are trying to find ways to drive their costs down when it comes to getting behind the wheel. He continued to point out that his group’s analysis shows that car insurance prices went up by 31% last year – equivalent to 44p per day.

  1. David Britten says:

I have a sports coupe that I will have to sell or scrap and buy something more economical. If I do get another car, it won’t change my daily usage or distance travelled, so this should represent a net loss to the exchequer. I hope many thousands of drivers will do the same thing and bring it home to the monumental buffoon Osbourne, that there our pockets are not bottomless.

  2. Brett says:

Fuel costs are stupid. It has taken me a long time to get an old car with the performance i want and now i must consider selling it. Which will now harder to do as many other people will also not be considering a low MPG car, no matter its performance.
Hopefully i may be able to afford to buy an old Citroen AX 1.4 Diesel, at least that will save me money as well as keep my old car (100mpg recorded).
