Woman is accused of theft for taking Tesco garbage
A woman is set to go on trial for theft after helping herself to food that was thrown away by Tesco, just after a power cut.
Dozens of people couldn’t believe their luck when the supermarket giant bagged up food worth thousands of pounds, regarded as spoiled stock, then left it out on the street. Ms Sasha Hall, aged 21, helped herself to some potato waffles, as well as pies and ham, from a store in Essex.
However, she was stunned after police came to her home then arrested her for theft by finding. They then took her to the nearest police station in handcuffs. Defending herself, the young woman said that there was at least £3,000 worth of stock just going to waste outside and, because it was thrown out, she thought that she could instead put it to much better use. However, when the police turned up, she became distraught and now feels like a criminal.
Hall, who is a shop worker, said that any supermarket, especially Tesco , proud of its slogan “Every little helps”, would have been pleased the food wasn’t going to be completely wasted.
She added that she would like to think that the police have much better things to do with their time than chasing after people that have picked up potato waffles out on the street. In total, she helped herself to at least £200 of food, which is a third of her monthly wage.
